GreenHouse Gas Protocol (GHGP)

The GreenHouse Gas Protocol (GHGP) is the most highly regarded standard for reporting CO2e emissions.

What do I need to know?

The GreenHouse Gas (GHG) Protocol is the highest international standard for reporting corporate CO2 emissions.

Companies must divide the CO2 emissions associated with their corporate activities into 3 scopes as follows:

  • Scope 1: The emissions from owned or operated facilities (office equipment, the exhaust from the tailpipes of a company's vehicle fleet)
  • Scope 2: The emissions from purchased energy
  • Scope 3: This includes CO2 emissions associated with upstream and downstream activities (upstream: transportation, business travel, purchased services, products, etc.) - (downstream: production, investment, use of products manufactured by the company for disposal, etc.)
